Instead of 3x3 rows of enemies, you are presented with 4x2 you can only attack or be attacked by enemies in the front two columns (magical attacks are different). The battle system changed a bit from FF1.
Instead of the old FF1 way of going into your inventory to use Key Items, Asking and Learning also allows you to show or use items in the same way, so interacting with a statue later in the game presents you with the same Ask/Learn/Item box which makes it very clear you need to use something on this statue. At first, it was somewhat of a chore, but as the game progressed I would enjoy trying different combinations with different characters to see how they would react (sometimes with disastrous results!). This is how you progress the story in most situations. When speaking to other characters, you are given the ability to Ask about any of the previously Learned words. With that being said, the game felt very alive and I really felt like my actions were actually doing something worthwhile.Ī truly innovative feature of this game is Learning and Asking when a character speaks of a topic you've never heard of before, you have the ability to Learn words. Compared to FF1, you will be visiting the first town in the game after every gameplay chapter, and each time the townspeople/princess/etc give you new advice and react to the changing state of the world. The game relies on world events that totally change character interactions when revisiting locations. The Good Stuff For a game that originally came out in 1988 it had a very advanced story and scenario system. Quick-save was allowed (like save-state for the GBA) and I used it pretty liberally.
My rules for playing: No FAQs or Walkthroughs. I wanted to play it with a completely open mind, try to forget the criticisms and really enjoy myself. Older players criticize its difficulty and lack of depth, newer players crush it because it lacks many features polished RPGs of today contain. This is a game that doesn't get much love.
